Special Market Sessions
Muhurat Trading (Diwali): NSE and BSE conduct a special 60-minute evening trading session on Diwali (Laxmi Puja day) — typically 6:00–7:00 PM IST. Despite the market holiday, this symbolic session celebrates the new financial year in the Hindu calendar. Volume is low but sentiment-rich. Many investors make small equity purchases during Muhurat for auspicious reasons.
Commodity and Currency Market Holidays
MCX (commodity futures) and forex segments may have different trading windows and holiday calendars from equity markets. MCX typically trades Monday–Saturday with extended evening hours (up to 11:30 PM for metals and energy). Check MCX website for their specific holiday list.
Pre-Market and Post-Market Sessions
- Pre-open session: 9:00 AM – 9:15 AM (order collection and price discovery)
- Normal market: 9:15 AM – 3:30 PM
- Post-close session: 3:40 PM – 4:00 PM (closing price orders for delivery)
Settlement Calendar
Under T+1 settlement (since January 2023), shares bought on a trading day are credited to your demat account the next business day. If you buy on a Friday before a Monday holiday, shares arrive in your demat on Tuesday (skipping the Monday holiday). SEBI may review moving to T+0 or instantaneous settlement in 2026–27.
