What is Nifty 50?

The Nifty 50 (full name: NSE Nifty 50) is India's flagship stock market index, representing the 50 largest and most liquid companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It is calculated and maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

Launched on April 22, 1996 with a base value of 1,000, the Nifty 50 has grown to over 24,000 points as of 2026 — a ~24× return in 30 years, implying a CAGR of approximately 11-12% including dividends.

How Nifty 50 is Calculated

The index uses free-float market capitalisation weighted methodology. Larger companies have more influence. Formula:

Index Value = (Current Market Cap of all 50 stocks) / (Base Market Cap) × Base Value (1000)

Only the freely tradeable portion of shares (not held by promoters, government, or strategic investors) counts toward market cap.

Sectoral Composition (approximate)

  • Financial Services (Banks + NBFCs): ~35%
  • IT / Technology: ~13%
  • Oil & Gas: ~12%
  • Consumer Goods (FMCG): ~9%
  • Automobiles: ~7%
  • Other sectors: ~24%

Nifty 50 P/E Ratio — What It Means

The P/E ratio of Nifty 50 tells you how expensive the market is relative to earnings. Historical ranges:

  • Below 16×: Historically cheap — good long-term buying opportunity
  • 16–22×: Fairly valued — normal range
  • Above 25×: Stretched valuation — exercise caution
